Research topics
I’m Aaron Hyzen, and my research examines how knowledge and ideology circulate in society, with particular attention to the ways media and communication technologies shape these processes. My work focuses on propaganda, mis- and disinformation, political economy, epistemology, and digital popular culture. I am especially interested in questions of knowledge production, ideology, and power in the context of contemporary media systems.
I explore a wide range of related topics, including emerging technologies such as generative AI and algorithmic recommender systems; the dynamics of conspiracy theories; concentrated media ownership and consolidation; the decline of local news and its implications for civic information; and the cultural politics of digital meme culture, among others. Together, these research interests reflect a broader commitment to understanding the power relations behind news, information and media systems and their implications for democracy, equity, and public life.
